Abstract

There are no validated and culturally relevant instruments available in Spanish or in Chile for assessing family resilience, which hinders both research and the design of interventions based on family strengths. To translate, adapt, and analyze the psychometric properties of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) in a sample of Chilean mothers and fathers. A two-stage, quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study. In Study 1, standard cross-cultural adaptation procedures (independent translations, synthesis, back-translation, expert review, and focus groups) were followed to assess the clarity, coherence, and comprehensibility of the items, adjusting wording and eliminating one item due to low comprehensibility and redundancy. In Study 2, 393 participants completed an online form containing the adapted WFRQ and sociodemographic data. Descriptive analyses, normality tests, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, an assessment of convergent validity among subscales, and an estimation of internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha were conducted. The Chilean version of the WFRQ consisted of 28 items organized into three dimensions that replicate the original theoretical model (belief systems, family organization, and family communication). Factor analyses revealed a stable and coherent multifactorial structure, with adequate fit indices and high internal consistency for the total scale and its subscales. The Chilean version of the WFRQ (WFRQ-28) is a psychometrically valid instrument for assessing family resilience, providing a useful tool for research and for designing clinical and psychosocial interventions focused on families strengths.
