Abstract

September 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état in Chile, an event that allowed measuring the media’s role as designers of a country’s collective memory. For this purpose, the treatment given to commemorating the coup by two antagonistic newspapers was analyzed. A content analysis was made of the news published by El Mercurio (conservative) and El Siglo (communist) in the days before and immediately after the event. Chi-square tests were performed to find significant differences. The results indicate that El Mercurio is beginning to describe Pinochet's government as a ‘dictatorship’ but refuses to describe Pinochet as a ‘dictator’: one-third of the articles dedicated by El Mercurio to commemorating the 50th anniversary of Allende's fall included the word ‘dictatorship’ at least once. This word was never used in El Mercurio to refer to the regime of Augusto Pinochet when he ruled as ‘His Excellency’, which was the term El Mercurio used to refer to Pinochet. El Siglo chooses not to forget human rights violations. With the end of the Cold War and real socialism, and the return of democracy in Chile, El Mercurio began to ‘soften’ its well-known radical stance. At the same time, El Siglo continues to argue that justice is still owed to human rights and that the socialist project of the Popular Unity should be remembered and valued.
